About us
At Champion Youth we believe that every young person deserves a champion. We are an alternative provision focused on youth mentoring, supporting young people as they navigate life's challenges. Champion Youth is committed to making a real difference, that's why we don't just offer a job, we offer a community who are collaborative, inclusive, and deeply committed to making a real difference.
About the role
As a Youth Mentor you will be building life-changing relationships. You will work directly with young people aged 11-18 who may be facing personal, social, or educational barriers. Your goal is to guide, inspire, and empower them to recognise their own potential and achieve their personal goals. You will work with a range of young people and schools facilitating 1:1 mentoring sessions. Your role is to collect a young person from their allocated school or home address and complete their mentoring session with an activity of their choice. Sessions last between 2 and 6 hours and run on a weekly basis. You will complete either one, two or three sessions per day which may be at different starting locations. At the end of the session you must complete a report form to send to the commissioner.
Key responsibilities
Plan and carry out engaging mentoring sessions: Our sessions are choice led by the individuals we support out in the local community. This means you will need to be adaptable and able to think on your feet as one session will look very different to the next.
Build Trusting Relationships: Establish strong, respectful, and safe connections with young people, their caregivers and educational professionals.
Set goals: Help young individuals identify their strengths, set personal milestones (academic, emotional, or career-focused), and create actionable plans to achieve them.
Advocacy & Support: Act as a sounding board and advocate for young people, helping them navigate school, family dynamics, or social services.
Collaborate & Document: Work closely with families, schools, and social workers, keeping accurate and confidential progress notes
What we are looking for
Someone with the "right" attitude: empathy, patience, a non-judgmental approach and a genuine passion for working with youth. Due to the nature of what we do it is vital that we turn up with positivity and energy for each and every session, reliability and punctuality are really important to us.
At least 2 years of experience working with young people, preferably SEMH or SEN however this can include youth work, coaching, teaching, social work, or volunteering. Qualifications in youth work, psychology, social work or sports coaching are desirable but not essential.
Basic safegaurding knowledge and understanding of how to create a safe learning environment.
Adaptable communication - an ability to connect with young people on their level, while remaining professional and authoritative.
All candidates must have a valid driving licence, provide two written references and undergo and enhanced DBS check.
What’s in it for you?
Real Impact: See the positive results of your work every single day.
CPD: Access to ongoing professional development, mental health first aid training, and safeguarding certifications
Work-Life Balance: Our work is term time only, and primarily runs between school hours of 9am until 3pm. Outside of this you will be required to attend 1 team catch up per week and complete 1-2 hours of admin per day which can be done at your own convenience.
A Supportive Team: Regular supervision, team-building days, and a culture that prioritises your well-being just as much as the youth we support.
